RAY LAMONTAGNE at the Greek Theatre, Los Angeles

Ray LaMontagne

Very few things will remind me of autumn more than watching Raymond Charles Jack LaMontagne perform under the stars of the October California sky at the Greek Theatre. The Bell Brigade opened the concert and later joined Ray onstage to complete the band. In promotion of his new record “Supernova” which came out in April, Ray performed an array of songs old and new including “Burn” from 2004’s Trouble. I was happy to hear Ray joke with the crowd that he would be performing for 25 more years. After a brief pause he changed his mind, “30.”

I was fortunate enough to photograph his concert at Cathedral Sanctuary at Immanuel Presbyterian Church (pictured above) when the record came out earlier this year, and his voice echoed through the church. A few of my favorites from the new album include “Supernova,” “Ojai,” and the song that seemingly closed the encore “Drive In Movies.” Ray sings

“I wanna be Brando in the Wild One
I wanna be somethin’ to someone
Cause nothin’ ever happens in this Town,
The same old crew, hangin’ around
Jus’ waitin for some shit to go down
But we love our Drive-in Movies”

As the audience erupted into applause and headed for the exits, Ray returned to the stage with his acoustic guitar and began playing the chords to “Shelter” in which everyone froze. At that second I saw the moon shine through an opening through the clouds and I ran back to my seat, a fitting song to an amazing evening.
